Social Media Reacts to Charlize Theron Calling Afrikaans a “Dying Language”

Social Media Reacts to Charlize Theron Calling Afrikaans a “Dying Language”. She is currently the lady of the moment on various social media platforms. Charlize Theron got the whole country talking after sharing her views about the Afrikaans language.

Although based in America, Theron was born and raised in the small town of Benoni in South Africa. She moved to the States years ago, where she did modelling as well as acting. Theron’s career expanded by the end of the 1990s, and she became one of the best actresses of our time.

The great thing about her though, is that despite her global fame, she has not forgotten her roots, and constantly helps underprivileged South Africans where she can. Theron has done a lot of amazing work against racism, HIV and AIDS, Women’s rights and is the United Nations ambassador for peace.

In a recent interview the multi-award winning actress and philanthropist rubbed some South Africans the wrong way. She called her native Afrikaans “a dying language”, and joked that the language is spoken by “about 44 people” and is “not very helpful”. Well, as expected some feathers were ruffled and the issue has escalated to social media with different views.

Millions in South Africa who speak Afrikaans are not happy about her take. Probably they hoped Theron being a global star, will use her status to promote her culture abroad. But hey, she decided to say what she feels is the honest truth about Afrikaans.Other South African though, do not see anything with Theron sharing her views about her native language.
