I Had A Sad Childhood, Lots of Trauma,” Thandiswa Mazwai. Sometimes when you see a person all happy and smiling, it is difficult to believe the had it tough growing up. One person who hides trauma very well is multi-award winning songstress, Thandiswa Mazwai.

Like most people out there, Thandiswa’s upbringing was marked by adversity, loss, and resilience. As the eldest to her siblings, she had to assume the role of a parent, after their mother died. Because of this, two ears back, her sister Ntsiki Mazwai took to Twitter to appreciate the exceptional job Thandiswa did as well as the hardships that came with it.

Her hardships in a way shaped her into the influential artist she is today. It was through music that Thandiswa found solace and an avenue for self-expression. She discovered her passion for singing and songwriting, using her powerful voice to share her personal experiences, challenge the status quo, and give voice to the marginalized.

I had a sad childhood. Lots of trauma. Then my mother died when I was 16 &things got even worse. Music saved my life. Anything could have become of me. I became awesome. That’s life. I’m am imperfect, human, fallible but I’m really awesome with a generous heart in spite of it all,” Thandiswa said.
