Africa’s Top 30 Under 30 Inspirational Young People 2016 [PART4]

This year’s list identifies young Africans, mostly below 30 years of age, who are doing remarkable work in their countries to facilitate development in the lives of people in their communities and throughout the continent.

16. Karuna Rana, Mauritius

Karuna Rana has been actively engaged in the environmental and youth leadership area. She currently works with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as Youth Editor for the Global Environment Outlook (GEO-5) and is part of the UNEP Youth Steering Committee on Rio 20. As the former UNEP Tunza Youth Advisor for Africa, Karuna took the message of young people to several high-level conferences, as well as participating in the Occupy COP17 movement in Durban. She also founded and coordinated Wake Up Call Mauritius’s successful appeal to the Mauritian Government for an active Mauritian youth participation at Rio+20 and in sustainable development as a whole. Karuna also has an interest in civic journalism and is a Contributor to the award-winning blog Speak Your Mind, as well as Mail and Guardian’s Thought Leader blog.

17. Samuel Malinga, Uganda

Samuel Malinga

The 26 year-old Ugandan agricultural engineer won the Tony Elumelu Prize for Business at the 2015 Future Africa Awards. His company, Sanitation Africa, has developed a full-cycle sanitation system that starts with a local, low-cost yet hygienic modular latrine and ends with the conversion of sludge into cooking briquettes and agricultural manure.

18. Toya DeLazy, South Africa

Toya Delazy

Latoya Nontokozo Buthelezi (26), better known to many by her stage name Toya Delazy, is a singer, pianist, dancer and performer from KwaZulu- Natal . She is currently signed to Sony Music Africa. Delazy was nominated in the Best International Act (Africa) category at the 2013 BET Awards. Her debut studio album, Due Drop, was supported by the singles “Pump It On”, “Love Is in the Air”, “Are You Gonna Stay?”, “Heart” and “Memoriam”. Upon its release, the album was acclaimed by both critics and fans. Following the release of her debut studio album, Delazy took home the awards for Newcomer of the Year and Best Pop Album at the 2013 SAMAs . She made a major impact on South African top 40 radio with the release of her aforementioned singles.

19. Orondaam Otto, Nigeria

Orondaam Otto is a young African born and raised in Nigeria, a country he has so much believe in. He has a bachelor’s degree in Human Anatomy from the University of Port Harcourt and holds an executive masters in project management from CUPE UK and certificate in Social Change, Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship from the United Nations University for Peace, Costa Rica. He founded Slum2School Africa in 2012 during his national youth service as an intervention to advocate for and improve access/quality of education for disadvantaged children in slums and remote communities.

20. Stella Mutale Sata, Zambia

Stella Mutale Sata

Stella Mutale Sata is the creator of the StellaProject, which showcases brilliant change-makers and inspires future change-makers whilst actively searching for change-makers in rural communities or excluded communities who may otherwise remain in obscurity because of infrastructural and other hurdles.
