Basetsana Kumalo On The Last Straw That Made Her Leave An Abusive Relationship. Gender based violence knows no age, race or status. Basetsana Kumalo is one of many South African women who have sadly suffered domestic violence at some point in their lives.
She has always been open about it, and has mentioned it in her memoir, Bassie: My Journey of Hope. Just like many women, the TV mogul did not leave immediately and she kept on covering up the abuse.
Basetsana even suffered a miscarriage due to being physically abused. The last straw was when her ex, boxing champion Dingane Thobela pulled out a gun on her.
“The toughest time I faced was when I was in an abusive relationship, the last straw being when he pulled a gun on me. #GenderBasedViolence is a stigma in our country, and a woman is killed every 3 hours,” she said.
