American Embassy Vacancy: Maintenance Mechanic

The U.S. Consulate General in Cape Town is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic in the Facility Management Office. Individual must possess trades certification and minimum 3 years post qualification experience on relevant commercial and domestic systems. Strong plumbing background a plus.

 

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications Required: 

NOTE:  ALL APPLICANTS MUST ADDRESS EACH SELECTION CRITERION DETAILED BELOW WITH SPECIFIC AND COMPREHENSIVE INFORMATION SUPPORTING EACH ITEM.

Items 1- 5 are ALL REQUIRED 

1.Education:  

Completion of grade 10 required.

Completion of either a three year apprenticeship resulting in a NTC-3 qualification or vocational training in plumbing or mechanical equivalent to journeymen level is required.

2.Experience:  

A minimum of three years of relevant trade experience maintaining plumbing systems in a modern commercial office building is required.

Experience in maintaining and repairing fire protection (sprinkler) systems, water treatment/purification systems, pumps, boiler systems and the ability to repair other plumbing equipment found in commercial office facilities is required.

3.Language

-English level IV (fluent) reading/writing/speaking is required.  (This will be tested).

-Level III (good working knowledge) of one other South African official language – reading/writing/speaking is required.

Knowledge:

-Knowledge of maintenance practices and procedures is required.

-Working knowledge of OSHA practices and abide by those regulations is required.

4.Skills and Abilities:

-Ability to provide expert input on the maintenance activities of other disciplines, in particular where planned maintenance is concerned is required.

-Ability to perform strenuous manual labor and ability to lift 25 kg is required.

-Must have a valid South African code 8 driver’s license.

-Ability to interpret blue prints, schematics and sketches is required.

-Familiarity with safety practices, personal protective equipment (PPE) and ability to operate a variety of maintenance power tools are required.

-Must be a team player and also work independently with less supervision.

-Must have good customer service skills as he/she will be dealing with occupants at residences.  (This will be tested).

Job Specification

Basic Function of Position:The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance and repair of plumbing and mechanical systems in all Government Owned (GO) and State Leased Properties (STL) assigned to the Consulate.  This position is additionally responsible for preventative maintenance on compressors and combustion engines, as well as the performance of contractors related to mechanical machinery.  Other functions of the position include repairing doors, locks, hinges and closure mechanisms, as well as carpentry related tasks.
