The Kumalos Release A Statement After Their Court Case Victory

Two days ago, the family breathed a sigh of relief after Jackie Phamotse was found guilty of defaming them.

For five years, the family has been battling it out with the best selling author. The case against Jackie stems from a series of tweets and statements she made on social media in 2018. She made allegations insinuating the existence of a compromising video involving the Kumalos and another male figure. The tweet trended, with social media users coming up with all sorts of theories. The accusations were not only damaging to the family’s reputation, they also became subjected to social media trolls.

Basetsana and Romeo have just released a joint statement, addressing the outcome of the case.

Mr. and Mrs. Kumalo welcome the outcome of the proceedings involving a case of defamation against Ms. Jackie Phamotse. The court has found Ms. Phamotse guilty on two counts of Crimen injuria, one count of Criminal Defamation and one count of Contempt of Court,” the statement began.

They also stated that they are relieved that the saga has now been dispensed with and look forward to starting a moment of reflection, healing, and recovery. Basetsana and Romeo also shared how the whole ordeal has affected them personally and professionally.

“This ordeal has been a severe test on the bonds of family and friends. Our children have been devastatingly impacted by these damning allegations. We watched with pain, their psychological beings, social lives and self-esteem taking unimaginable knocks. As business people, our ability to pursue sustainable livelihoods were hamstrung, with some business prospects being brought to a halt.

They are also grateful for the immense support from family, friends and the nation. When it comes to using social media, the couple wish to appeal to South Africans to exercise extreme caution and desist from bullying, making false claims and defamatory remarks about others.

“Social media remains a powerful avenue through which we can empower and educate each other. It is therefore critical that it is not used as an outlet to defame, disparage, and besmirch,” the Kumalos said.
