Is University Always Necessary? Makgotso M Weighs In On The Importance of Qualifications. Growing up, young children are encouraged to go to school i order to secure a better future for themselves. Back then, yes, it used to work. Going to school automatically granted a person the opportunity to get a better paying job, hence a better life. Unfortunately that is not always the case in the times we live in. A lot of people are sitting at home with all sorts of qualifications, but no jobs.

This the leaves people with a lot of questions when it comes to the importance of university education. Makgotso M took to Twitter to share a thread in which she unpacked the whole thing. The talented actress looked at the high unemployment rate in the country, which continues to grow, despite the qualified graduates we have. As part of the solution, Makgotso wondered, what if people took the money they could have used to study, and invest in starting their own businesses.

“I have a question. Is university always necessary? With some qualifications yes. But, always? The unemployment rates in South Africa are so high, with qualifications. What if people took that money they used for varsity and invested it in starting buisnesses?” Makgotso said.

Or better year, she advised students to rather take sometime to get to know themselves instead of rushing to university. A lot of students have studied wrong courses, just because of the pressure from their parents. Others have pursued courses that are not marketable, and are now sadly at home, with no jobs. There are also high paying jobs out there that do not require a university degree, you just have to look a little harder. In such instances, a gap year would have come in handy to help the aspiring student make a well informed decision.
