Nokuthula Mavuso On How Unfairly the Acting Industry Treats Women

Nokuthula Mavuso On How Unfairly the Acting Industry Treats Women. The entertainment industry in general is not kind to women. A number of female personalities lost various gigs after falling pregnant. If bringing life can cost you a job, what more of having an opinion.

The likes of Vatiswa Ndara, Moshidi Motshegwa, Nambitha Mpumlwana, and Mara Louw are among those who have lost jobs after publicly complaining. The industry has sort of blacklisted them, and despite their talents, they remain unemployed. Even Rami Chuene found herself in deep waters, after standing in solidarity with fellow actress Vatiswa.

Weighing in on the matter another actress has expressed the unfairness of the industry towards women. The award winning Nokuthula Mavuso has been in the industry for years, and seen it all. She stated that any matter that women get vocal about, chances are high that they will be in trouble.

“In my 18years working in this industry, I have come to the conclusion that women aren’t allowed to disagree about anything pertaining to the work. If they are vocal about pay, working conditions, sexual harassment, or even just being assertive, they are deemed divas & difficult,” she said.

She also noted that their male counterparts on the other hand get away with a lot. Some show up at work drunk, sexual misconduct, questionable hygiene, unprepared for scenes, going AWOL in the middle of a shoot day for a gig in a different province. They however still get jobs.

This kind of victimisation is not reserved for women actors. It goes as far as technical crew, production staff, wardrobe, makeup, even background actors. The rot is deep.

It is painful how Nambitha and Vatiswa have been treated. It’s cruel. An injustice,” Nokuthula said.
