Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng Celebrates Reaching the Top of Mount Kilimanjaro. One thing about the celebrated Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng, she loves adventure. Her social media pages are filled with videos and picture of herself hiking, swimming or just having the most fun.

She recently took on Mount Kilimanjaro, and made it to the top. Located in Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s tallest mountain at about 5,895 meters (19,340 feet). Although it wasn’t easy, the former University of Cape Town Vice chancellor of the, found the strength within to carry on.

It was a true reflection of the struggles of the past 6 years – constant fights with the unknown. As tough as it was, I consistently found strength within to soldier on. I could have chosen to quit midway but I chose to confront all the struggles head on and guess what? I emerged,” Phakeng said.

It goes without saying that the past months haven’t been an easy one for Phakeng. After immense pressure, she had to take an early retirement as Vice chancellor of the University of Cape Town. She is alleged to have received a R12m settlement as package. The early retirement took effect as from 1 April 2023. Phakeng has also been receiving backlash from prominent people including educators and journalists.

After concurring Kilimanjaro, Phakeng has stated that she has let go of the past, and starting a fresh. She is even willing to unblock the tweeps she has previously blocked.
