The Nation Mourns Talented Writer, Director and Producer Teboho Mahlatsi. South Africa has yet again lost a giant in the entertainment industry. Teboho Mahlatsi, a renowned writer, director and producer has sadly passed away.

The news of his passing was shared by award winning comedian and fellow filmmaker, David Kau. Without going into too much details he stated that Mahlatsi passed away today (Monday 3rd July 2023). At this moment, details surrounding his passing are still sketchy. The family has requested privacy as they mourn the legend. Further details will be communicated soon.

Mahlatsi was involved in a lot of film projects in the country. Many know him as part of the groundbreaking and controversial youth drama Yizo Yizo (1999), which is currently being aired on the streaming service Netflix. Mahlatsi also did Portrait of a Young Man Drowning (1999), and For Love and Broken Bones (2016).

He has been behind the creation of Bomb’s drama series such as Jacob’s Cross, Isibaya, and Ayeye. After being with Bomb Productions for two decades, Mahlatsi started a new company, Moseling Films. Mahlatsi also directed music videos such as Mnatebawen by Khuli Chana and Ghetto fabulous by Zola.

He is survived by his wife and two kids.

Industry peers and the nation at large are mourning the icon. He is remembered as a trailblazer and an inspiration to many aspiring filmmakers and producers. The likes of Mmabatho Montsho and Masasa Mbangeni paid touching and heartfelt tributes to the late Mahlatsi.
