Black Coffee Says All He Cares About Is Doing His Work Well

To be an artist of Black Coffee’s stature means simultaneously being everywhere and no place at once. He is an artist in constant motion, never in one place for too long – Spain today, London the next week and back in South Africa the next. But such is his influence that he always feels just about at arm’s reach – either by way of mp3; another sold out performance or newspaper headline parading his achievements. Not that he’s too concerned with the idea of celebrity though.

“I just love making music,” he says. “All the other additional stuff – the media attention, the awards – isn’t as important as the work. It’s a distraction. All I care about is doing my work well.”

And who can argue that he hasn’t? This year’s been a particularly good one for the man born Nkosinathi Maphumulo. He was part of the roster that featured on Alicia Keys’ In Common Remix EP, won a BET award for Best International Act and his latest release Pieces of Me, has sold over 100 000 units (according to him). The man’s been hard at work.

But if every house starts with a foundation – the initial brick that later brings the entire house together – Black Coffee’s would be his self-titled debut.
