5 Facts You Should Know About Freedom Day

On the 27th of April, people will be celebrating freedom day which is a national public holiday in South Africa. Although this day is marked as one of the important days in history, many people in South Africa are still lost with not knowing more about what the day holds.

1. The day celebrates freedom and commemorates the first post-apartheid elections held on that day in 1994.

2. Since the arrival of the White man at the Cape in 1652, the indigenous peoples of South Africa came under White control and domination.

3. Previously, under the apartheid regime, non-whites had only limited rights to vote

4. Some groups and social movements celebrate a version of Freedom Day called UnFreedom Day in which they mourn the unfreedom still experienced by the poor.

5.  The elections were the first non-racial national elections where everyone of voting age of over 18 from any race group was allowed to vote
