10 ways to become a Music Producer

First of all for you to be a music producer you need to be a fan of music, you need to live and breathe music. A music producer is someone who helps bring an artist’s vision to life, and it doesn’t matter whether you producing one track or the whole album you need it to bring to live and it should resonate with people out there. You need to be true, real and relevant; you need to convince people to buy into your product.

1. Reach the Genres

As you’ll be working with different artists it will be wise for you to learn all the genres to accommodate the artists you’re working with. Research the artist you are working with and be clued up about their style.

2.  Learn to engineer (Mixing and Recording)

As a music producer, your primary responsibility is to record music. You would do yourself and everyone who works with you a huge favour if you learnt how to studio engineer.

3.  Be creative

When you’re in a creative space with the artist they tend to appreciate that and the connection grows because both of you are bounce idea and together. This allows you to learn about different artists and they style.

4.  Learn to communicate with your artist  

You need to be smooth, warm and bright/knowledgeable about music. Learn to ask what is expected of you? Learn about the artist, what they like and which sound they like? To avoid surprises and disappointments on both parties.

5.  Learn an instrument

If you want to work with the best, you have to be the best. Learning to play any instrument will train your ear to hear a different sound. Understanding music from the other side of the soundboard will make you much better equipped to hear its full potential.

Collaborate with other music producers

Collaborations are good because you get to learn from other producers. Collaborations succeed because you can use the other producer’s strengths to mask your weaknesses, and hopefully use your own strengths to mask theirs.

Start networking

Start attending events, gig and workshops, put yourself out there. Tell people around you that you’re music producer to spread the word.

Learn about the business

As a music producer, artists will often turn to you for advice on copyright and licensing. A basic knowledge of copyright law will hold you in good stead when this happens.

Have a basic knowledge of accounting and finance so that you can handle the financial aspects of the business.

Utilize internet

Use the internet to put your work out there platforms like YouTube, Soundcloud and iTunes will definitely market you work to the world. Use social networks to get the word out about your music. Social networks deliver viral success to hundreds of artists

Save money

As you grow and develop in the industry and you get known, it amount to a lot of artists working with you that means money in bank. Start saving money and build your own studio with eguipment that you want or you prefer working with.
