Bonnie Mbuli Reacts To A Film She Stars In Scooping An International Award. When it comes to film making, South Africa is always well represented on a world stage. For example, local film, Losing Lerato, bagged several international awards this year.

Another local film, Barakat is also doing amazing things. The film which celebrates the life and culture in the Cape Flats, has just bagged, Best Narrative Feature award, at the 23rd Reel Sisters of the Diaspora film festival in the US. Bonnie Mbuli, who stars in the film, was so excited as she shared the great news.

Yay, a film we shot earlier this year just won its first US award- “Barakat” celebrates life and culture in the Cape Flats, wins US Award,” she gushed.

The film is about, Aisha Davids, a single mother who raised four headstrong sons in the middle-class Muslim suburb of Rylands, Cape Town. After the tragedy of losing their father, the four brothers went their separate ways when their father’s death led to a fallout over the family business.

Since the rift, Aisha has attempted to bring her boys back together for Eid-al-Fitr and the boys have turned her down. But this year, there’s more to it – Aisha has a new lease on life with a new romance, and it’s getting serious. Now, she’s intent on introducing Albertus to her family over the Eid long weekend, as Eid may be the only excuse to get them all under one roof.

Barakat is set to released in cinemas in South Africa in May 2021. We definitely can’t wait to see this one.
