Applications Open For The South African Weather Service Bursary Programmes. The South African Weather Service is opening a number of bursary programmes for various but related studies in the field of science. These bursary opportunities are as follows:

  • Introduction to Meteorology (one-year bridging course) followed by BSc Hons Meteorology and a postgraduate course in Weather Forecasting
  • Bachelor of Science Bursary Programmes

Introduction to Meteorology (one-year bridging course) / BSc Hons Meteorology / Weather Forecasting Postgraduate Certificate Forecasting

This bursary programme is designed for applicants have a three-year degree in BSc with Applied Mathematics, Physics and Mathematics subjects. Successful candidates will undergo a basic meteorology courses at the University of Pretoria and will commence in February 2020..

Upon successful completion of the Basic Meteorology course, candidates will get an opportunity to further pursue a BSc Meteorology Honours course and a postgraduate Weather Forecasting certificate.

Bachelor of Science Bursary Programmes

The SAWS is currently offering bursary opportunities to 1st – 3rd year students in the following disciplines:

  • Meteorology
  • Air Quality (Honours)
  • Agro-Meteorology
  • Climatology
  • Atmospheric Science

All courses must include Mathematics and Physical Sciences subjects. Upon successful completion of the BSc course, bursars are required to pursue a BSc Honours qualification. A BSc Honours degree is needed in order to gain employment with the SAWS.

Requirements

Applicants must be able to meet the minimum eligibility requirements prescribed by the bursary programme being applied for:

Introduction to Meteorology (one-year bridging course) / BSc Hons Meteorology / Weather Forecasting Postgraduate Certificate Forecasting

  • Must have taken up Mathematics Level 2 and Physics Level 1 as subjects
  • Must agree to take up BSc Honours course followed bythe Weather Forecasting postgraduate degree

Bachelor of Science Bursary Programmes

In order to qualify for admission, candidates meet the following basic requirements:

  • Must be currently pursuing or intending to pursue any of the courses mentioned
  • Applicants with Grade 12 or matric certificate with 70% grade average in Math and Physical Sciences are most welcome to apply
  • Must be able to complete the course and the BSc Weather Service Honours course

Selection Process

Only shortlisted applicants will receive feedback about their applications. Consider the application as unsuccessful if no feedback comes within one month of the closing date.

  • Acceptance letter from the University of Pretoria
  • Full academic transcript

Bachelor of Science Bursary Programme supporting documents. Indicate reference number WS11/10/2019 on your application.

  • Letter from the higher education institution confirming acceptance to the prescribed course
  • Results from Grade 12/matric
  • For students already taking up any of the prescribed courses, submit acceptance letter from the University
