Vacancy: Store Designer

Overview The emporium retail format that Truworths uses is unique to the group. Most Truworths stores are based on the emporium format, which entails bringing together various brands in a store-within-a-store concept. The combination of many brands in one store creates an exciting atmosphere and enhances the overall shopping experience by giving customers the opportunity to shop mainstream as well as supporting brands.
The incumbent will be expected to conceptualise the creative and structural design of the following brands within the emporium concept:
Truworths; Truworths Man; Uzzi, Daniel Hechter; LtD; Inwear; Ginger Mary; Jewellery; Elements (Cosmetics & Fragrances); etc.
As well as conceptualise the creative and structural design of the following departments within the emporium concept:
Shoes & Bags, Lingerie and Accessories.
The incumbent will also be expected to conceptualise the creative and structural design of the other free standing brands within the group (these brands do not fall within the emporium concept):
Identity and Young Designers Emporium.
It is important to note that this is primarily an in-house operation. It is unlikely that we would make extensive use of external consultants.
Key Responsibilities 1. Initiate creative and innovative store design concepts across the various brands as detailed above (as well as any additional brands that may be developed or acquired in the future).

2. Execution of creative ideas from conceptual thinking to issuing of final detailed design drawings ready for implementation.

3. Delivery of approved design solutions within specific project budgets. Work closely with Contracts to ensure that concepts stay within relevant budget as per agreed CAPEX.

4. Review of all plans as they “make their way” through the store design drawing process (sketch plan, creative plan, etc.).
5. Work closely within a talented, creative and successful team of store designers. Manage own deliverables & ensure outputs are achieved timeously.

6. Work within an environment that fosters creative thinking, innovation and rational risk taking.

7. Develop a close collaboration with the store Planning and Contracts teams (within the broader store design department), so as to meet objectives within agreed time frames and budget resources.

8. Improvement and maintenance of standards of design and implementation requiring a high attention to detail.

9. Chair the Visual / Store Design weekly meeting and ensure that all matters raised receive the relevant attention & actions that are agreed are implemented speedily. Record minutes.

10. Develop a store design by grade matrix reflecting the relevant treatment by brand by store grade (take into account store classification, grade, various aspects of store such as railage, ceiling treatment, etc.)

11. Prepare for the Architectural Conceptual Meeting’s.

Key Requirements 1. Have the technical (either Architectural and Interior Design) experience and qualifications.
2. Have experience in working with a diverse, mature and creatively talented team.
3. Be highly receptive to new ideas/proposals/thoughts – change and adaptability are cornerstones of Truworths success.
4. Be creative/innovative – but in a deliverable and very practical sense.
5. High pace/volume and complex environment and therefore be able to thrive in this culture.
6. Strong project management skills (will also look after a number of projects at the same time).
7. Strong work ethic; focused on career and deliverables as well as having a very high attention to detail.
8. Strong budget/financial control skills.
