Mo’ Molemi Interview

New PictureMotlapele “Mo Molemi” Morule can undoubtedly be considered one of the hardest, fastest and truly exceptional South African Hip-Hop artists.

After a long break, Mo Molemi is back with the much anticipated release of his third album, A SIA. The album title, A SIA (And So Is Afrika), is an accumulation of various ideas.  A SIA was developed initially as a travel novel written by Mo’Molemi as he backpacked through Zimbabwe, Zambia, then caught a ship through Lake Tanganyika and then backpacked to Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique before returning back home to Mahikeng, South Africa. The novel never came to be, but instead metamorphosed into a 19 track album questioning the place of Africa among the nations of the world.

The A SIA album has classical lyrical flow that Mo’Molemi fans have come to know and love. It features tracks with the likes of Tumi of Tumi and The Volume, Tuks, Zeus, Lection, Blue Skye, Eazy Lap, Fifi Cooper, Kea Mmoki, Towdeemac and heavyweight artists from Botswana namely: Mosako, A.T.I, Orakle, E.P.I.C Jujuboy and traditional artist, Ntirelang Bearman.

What do you think is the relevance of indigenous language in giving African Hip Hop a unique, exportable identity?

When people lose their language they lose their culture, their sense of self and identity. They become everything else other than themselves. People who are not themselves are regressive.

What are you looking forward to the most about performing at Maftown Heights this year?

I look forward to seeing lovers of Motswako who gather there from everywhere to see the cream of the art form.

Why should people come see you at Maftown Heights this year and what can they expect?

People should come see Fifi Cooper, Eaze Lap and myself kill it for Maftown. I will be performing tracks from my latest album A SIA!
