Lifestyle Pantyliners

“The key to hygiene, freshness and comfort””

At Lifestyle we understand that women’s bodies are not always predictable, and that sometimes we have discharges, or start our periods earlier, or end them later. This is why pantyliners are a must-wear for peace of mind, comfort, hygiene, and a means of keeping your underwear that stays dry. Lifestyle’s contributing gynaecologist and obstetrician Dr Krishna Lalloo, offers some insight into and tips for wearing pantyliners.

Did you know?
Pantyliners were designed to be used to protect your underwear from staining and to keep you feeling dry and comfortable on a daily basis. They are relatively similar to pads, but are thinner and smaller, and designed for days when you don’t need much absorbency – only from the natural secretions that occur daily. They fit discreetly into your hand or purse so that they are conveniently always on hand.
Why wear pantyliners?

Protection
Wearing pantyliners acts as added protection for days during ovulation when your body produces more mucous, keeping you dry and comfortable. Dr Lalloo also suggests wearing pantyliners when periods are irregular, especially during puberty and menopause to prevent discomfort, and staining of your underwear. Dr Lalloo goes on to say, “They can also be worn at the beginning or end of your period when the menstrual flow is light.”

“Pantyliners are also excellent indicators about any abnormalities or changes in discharges, such as colour, which might need to be addressed by a doctor,” says Dr Lalloo. “For every woman vaginal discharges are a normal part of our menstrual cycle. Vaginal discharges are a liquid produced by the mucous membranes in your vagina and the glands in your cervix, which is the at the top of the vagina, where it meets the womb,” says Dr Lalloo. “Normal discharges can be transparent, and white or yellowish. They can also be brown, before your period properly starts. The scent can be slightly acidic, which is only noticeable within close range of the liner and panties. Discharges indicate that your vagina is moist and healthy, but if there is unusual discolouration, a bad odour, irritation or itching, then consult your doctor.”

Hygiene

The regular changing of underwear and wearing of pantyliners can help prevent bacteria from breeding, and thus infections from arising. “Preferably wear cotton underwear as this material “breathes” and dries easily,” suggests Dr Lalloo.

More tips from Lifestyle:
If you can, avoid very tight fitting clothes, such as stockings, tights, synthetic leggings or pantyhose for long periods of time, as these can cause you to sweat and increase the chance of infections as your body isn’t able to “breathe”.

Practise good bathroom hygiene – always wash hands before and after using the toilet.

Keep your pubic hair in check – trimming, waxing or other hair removal methods can reduce sweating and odours.

Remember that pantyliners are not meant to be used as sanitary pads.
